Bridge Builder Award
The Bridge Builder Award was established by The Renaissance Collaborative (TRC) to honor an individual or organization that has worked in multiple arenas to build community. The honoree is one who exemplifies outstanding leadership in the revitalization of communities in the city of Chicago and exhibits a commitment that inspires us to have impact in the world.

This year's Bridge Builder award recipient is Providence Bank & Trust. Providence Bank & Trust is a full service community bank with 16 locations serving the Chicagoland area and Northwest Indiana. With the bank’s recent acquisition of Urban Partnership Bank, Providence Bank & Trust looks to continue the impactful mission started by Shore Bank, serving the low and moderate income communities on the south and west sides of Chicago. Since its inception, the founders held the principle of doing well by doing good—forming the Providence Bank & Trust Stewardship Program whereby 10% of the organization profits are reinvested in the communities they serve. In the 15 years of service, the bank has contributed over $4 million to local civic, non-profit and Christian organizations.
Accepting the award on behalf of Providence Bank is President & CEO Steven Van Drunen. Raised in South Holland, Illinois, Steve is a graduate of Trinity Christian College and has previously held positions with American National Bank, The First National Bank of Chicago, Pinnacle Bank and South Holland Trust and Savings Bank prior to starting Providence Bank in 2004.

Building Healthy Communities

This year’s event theme, “Building Healthy Communities,” is the culmination of TRC’s efforts to advocate for a comprehensive approach to community development. We built our programs with the understanding that a healthy community requires not just equal access to health care, but also equal access to wealth-building opportunities, affordable housing, healthy food options, education, spaces for active living, civic engagement & empowerment, a sustainable environment, and more. We believe firmly in our value statement that “all individuals have value and they can better contribute to themselves, their families, and their communities when provided the support they need.” As we help individuals overcome life’s obstacles, we are laying the foundation for a healthy community one person at a time.
