Environmental Sustainability

Organic Landscaping

Exposure to commonly used lawn chemicals are associated with cancer, immuno-response deficiencies, neurological diseases, and birth defects. TRC manages an organic landscaping social enterprise to reduce the risks of toxic chemicals for us, our pets, and our environment.

Solar Flower

TRC was the first nonprofit agency nationally to receive a Solar SmartFlower, solar panel system that, like its namesake, follows the sun throughout the day to generate maximum energy. The SmartFlower is located in the garden of The Renaissance Apartments and helps power the building.

Bronzeville Micro-Grid

TRC serves as a member ComEd’s Community Advisory Board for the Bronzeville Micro-grid, a small power grid that can connect to the main grid and disconnect from it to keep locally generated power flowing in times of emergency.

Affordable Comfort Workshops

As a grantee of the Illinois Science and Energy Foundation, TRC held community workshops to help residents learn how to reduce energy consumption and utility cost while still living comfortably.

Energy Efficiency

TRC participates in the US Department of Energy’s “Better Buildings Challenge,” committing to improving the energy efficiency of our buildings by at least 20% over 10 years.
